For fans of the butterfly stamps, we are offering a new collectible: uncut press sheets of the third stamp in the butterfly series, Spicebush Swallowtail. The 28 ¾” by 14 ¼” press sheets are available both and the die cuts between individual stamps. Each stamp sheet includes selvage markings denoting the printer and the ink colors used to print the stamps.
The spicebush swallowtail butterfly is mostly black, with bands of blue or blue-green iridescence on the hind wings. These beautiful colors are actually a form of defense, meant to tell birds, “I taste terrible!” Spicebush swallowtails closely resemble two other butterflies, the pipevine swallowtail and the black swallowtail, which taste bad to predators. But if you find the colors simply stunning, framing uncut press sheets is a way to turn small stamps into large pieces of art.
