Have you heard about the Month of Letters Challenge? It was created by award-winning novelist Mary Robinette Kowal, a champion of slow, reflective communication. Here’s the challenge:
In the month of February, mail at least one item through the post every day it runs. Write a postcard, a letter, send a picture, or a cutting from a newspaper, or a fabric swatch. Write back to everyone who writes to you. This can count as one of your mailed items. All you are committing to is to mail 24 items. Why 24? There are four Sundays and one US holiday. In fact, you might send more than 24 items. You might develop a correspondence that extends beyond the month. You might enjoy going to the mail box again.
Writers and regular people around the world are taking part in the challenge, and so are we! Will you join us? Let us know in the comments, and check back here throughout February to see how we’re doing. (If you’re on Twitter, follow #LetterMo.)
I am doing this! My goal is slightly more than 24 items – I’d like to send a postcard to each of the 50 U.S. states. I should have fun trying to find pen pals in Alaska and Hawaii…
Great goal, Mishell! And what fun. What kinds of postcards do you plan to send out? I’m a museum gift shop postcard fiend!
Sent two birthday cards yesterday and one more is ready to go out tomorrow. Have to say that the Garden of Love stamps make the envelopes look really special. Cards today – maybe next week I’ll tackle a whole letter.
Fantastic! Aren’t those Garden of Love stamps gorgeous? Oooh. Maybe I’ll use them on my next mailing…
Wow, what a great challenge, the mail box is lonely. It makes everyone feel special when you take the time to mail a letter or card to someone. Thanks I am up for the challenge
Yay! It’s such a fun challenge. Personalized mail adds so much wonderful color to the mailbox.
I started the challenge today. I think it’s a great idea. We’ve lost intimacy with e-mails and social media. This will be refreshing.

Fantastic! I see we are like minds . . . about letters and Jane Austen.
Miss Austen? You are speaking words that are very dear to me. Perhaps it goes with the name Mary?
Okay, I’m in! There are people I’ve been meaning to write a short note to for months!
Me too, Linda! What a wonderful way to get back in touch with our friends . . . and ourselves.
