Pushing the Envelope with Woody, Bullseye, & Jessie: Toy Story 2 Stamp Coming Soon!

On June 1, we will issue the Mail a Smile stamps, the second in a two-part issuance featuring Disney•Pixar characters. In the weeks leading up to the first day of issue, we’re going to focus on each of the new stamps. Today, let’s start with Toy Story 2!

In 1999, Toy Story 2 reopened the toy box, bringing Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and all their friends back to the screen. It also introduced two memorable new toy pals: Bullseye, a boisterous bronco, and cowgirl Jessie, whose role earned her a Patsy Montana Entertainer Award from the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.

Challenging themselves to use new technology to expand their storytelling power, the Pixar filmmakers, director John Lasseter, and co-directors Ash Brannon and Lee Unkrich achieved a wider-than-ever range of emotional diversity in the characters’ performances. The first film ever entirely created, mastered, and exhibited digitally, Toy Story 2 displayed technical, artistic, and storytelling excellence that won a Golden Globe Award for Best Picture—Musical or Comedy and two Grammy Awards for Best Song and Best Musical Album for Children.

The first issuance in this series, Send a Hello (still available!), was released in 2011 and featured characters from Disney•Pixar’s Ratatouille, Cars, Toy Story, WallE, and Up. A natural outgrowth of the successful Art of Disney stamp series issued between 2004 and 2008, the Send a Hello and Mail a Smile stamps tap the Disney•Pixar characters’ contemporary humor and lively personalities to convey an animated message about the positive impact of communicating by mail in any season and for any reason. The Mail a Smile stamps can be pre-ordered to day.
